Day 8: #manifestingdreams A tree does not halt its growth to fit in with the bushes. A tree does not uproot itself when someone asks. A tree does not fret over bumps and curves, lumps and grooves. A tree does not surrender. For today’s challenge, I thought I wanted to write about traveling, lofty career goals, adventure… but no. What I really need is to take a lesson from a tree. I need to know where is my rich soil, who is my nourishing rain, what is my sunshine. Only then will I thrive. That is my true dream. #yogagirlchallenge @yoga_girl @scottlawrencenelson #tree #lesson #metaphor #dream (at West African Research Center, Dakar, Senegal)

Day 7: #thankyou Gratefulness is not effortless. Thankfulness takes mindfulness. Today the lovely @ermlev cared for me (as she always does) by braiding my hair. Love it! On the right is Bissap (hibiscus) juice. Today I bought a bottle for my class an went around the table telling each person why I am thankful for them. Although it caused some giggles and blushing, I’m glad I did it. We may only be on this journey together for a month, but I won’t forget them for the rest of my life. #yogagirlchallenge @yoga_girl #braids #hair #thankful (at West African Research Center, Dakar, Senegal)

This week’s #modifiedmondays pose is #halfmoon #ardhachandrasana aka my asana enemy. To modify, I used a rock for my bottom hand and a tree for my foot. Great way to help engage abdominals and focus your Drishti! #yoga @beckajanse @BodyImageBuilder @goplantyourself @nicholchase @playfulpractice @huggermuggeryoga @yogapaws (at West African Research Center, Dakar, Senegal)

Day 6: #startanewroutine : because this theme only happens once on the challenge and one change I hope to make is on my mat, I decided to have two. Yup, I’m going all out for this one because these changes I have been thinking about for a long time. The first is in my practice : I never do inversions! I have a good practice and challenge myself but when it comes to headstand or handstand count me out. It’s not that I can’t do them or don’t want to do them I just don’t! Mystery on the mat, I guess. In addition to going upside down everyday, I want to read everyday. I either go 110% and read a book in a day or it takes me a week to get one chapter in. Because my yoga and meditation practices are in the mornings, I think I will stick to reading at night. Hopefully some nice dreams will follow! @yoga_girl #yogagirlchallenge #inversion #headstand @scottlawrencenelson #read #eckharttolle #anewearth #yogaeverydamnday #readeverydamnday (at Mermoz, Dakar, Senegal )

Day 5: #breakabadhabit One thing that I do on a regular basis that I want to stop doing: running away from photos. That is exactly what this little munchkin is doing! Photo challenges are hard for me. Sure, I take the occasional #selfie but for the most part I’m very uncomfortable in front of a camera unless I am doing a yoga pose. I know this comes from a complicated relationship I have with self image and I’m looking to improve it. Does this mean I want to turn my life around to become a model? Absolutely not. But I will commit to accepting myself and the way others see me. More memories, more photos, more love. #yogagirlchallenge #selflove #acceptance @yoga_girl (at Mermoz, Dakar, Senegal )

Day 3: #randomactofkindness I would like to share a quick story about how a mango can make your day. Not only are they delicious and the color of joy, they are also all over Senegal and smell fantastic. Well, all day long I had been contemplating what I was going to do for my random act of kindess. How could I do it without unconsciously offending my host family or annoying my fellow students? Everything I could think of felt contrived and silly. It took one rAndom act to spark another. Wally, our prof, pulled over on our travels back from the Reserve and bought each student a bag of mangos to share with their families. I was so happy to be given clear direction of what my rand act had to be: a labor of love. I couldn’t just get something or day something, I had to put in effort. So I did. Washing, peeling, cutting, serving and yes eating those mangos made me feel more connected to my family here. I was taught by my cousin how to clean them, by my aunt how to peel them, by my sister how to serve them and by my mother how to enjoy them. They each have shown me the deepest most sincere kindness and I could not be more grateful. #mangos #yogagirlchallenge @yoga_girl @scottlawrencenelson #sharethelove #mango (at Mermoz, Dakar, Senegal )
